Fingerless gloves are a brilliant accessory for knitters. They are usually a small project and therefore great to try out new techniques and ideas.
Plus they are great to show off that beautiful self-striping yarn that has been in the stash for too long and – once finished – provide a lovely piece of colour on dark autumn and winter days.
These fingerless gloves mainly knit flat and in garter stitch – with the exception of the thumb that is knitted right in the round at the start. Since knitting direction is changed a few times, this is NOT A BEGINNER PATTERN.

To knit these fingerless gloves you need the following materials
- a total of about 170 meters of fingering weight yarn weight yarn:
- for the pair in the picture below (sizes) I useed ONline Supersocke 4-fach Nova Color, Colourway 2653
- for the mitts in the picture above I used
- Zwerger Opal Blütenpracht, Colourway 54, Mohn Poppy
- and as a contrast an unknown dark violet fingering yarn
- for the rainbow coloured pair (title picture)
- I used Zwerger Opal Surprise, Colourway 4061
- and a dark grey sock yarn for contrast
- 3 mm knitting needles – I used 80 cm circulars as main needles
- stitch holders – I used big safety pins
- a crochet hook that is a bit bigger than the knitting needles (I used a 3.5 mm hook)
- a tapestry needle – for grafting and to weave in ends
Size and Gauge
The finished piece measures about 20 cm in height and about 17 cm in circumference (just below the thumb). The picture on the right shows one finished mitt and one just before sewing up the side seams.
In garter stitch 25 stitches gave 10 cm in width, and 13 ridges (26 rows) 5 cm in height – this was measured on an unblocked piece.
